Paula, Georgjedde's Danish translation of Paula the Piquôse by 'Akbar del Piombo' [Norman Rubington]

A Checklist
of the
Danish Olympia Press

Introductory Note

I am deeply indebted to Mr Gregory Stephenson of Virum, Denmark, for providing me with the information contained in the following list, and in the notes which precede it. With the exception of some minor editorial and layout adjustments, the work is entirely Mr Stephenson's, and is copyrighted in his name.

Between 1966 and 1968, twenty titles in the Danish Traveller's Companion Series were printed by the Obelisk Press in Copenhagen. All titles were translations into Danish of books originally published in English by the Olympia Press in Paris.

The volumes in the Danish Traveller's Companion Series were essentially uniform in size, design and format with those of the Paris Olympia Press, but not all of the titles in the Danish series were drawn from the Traveller's Companion Series published in Paris. Certain of the Danish translations were of books published by the subsidiary imprints of the Paris Olympia Press, including the Ophelia, Ophir and Othello series.

The books had stiff, olive-green wrappers. The front wrapper followed the Paris model, with a border rule consisting of a black chain-link rule enclosing a black-white-black rule. The layout of the front wrapper comprised: author's name / title of book / series number of book / Dansk Udgave / Af / Traveller's Companion / Olympia Press. The titlepages differed slightly, and were laid out thus: author's name / title of book / Traveller's Companion / Olympia Press / Obelisk.

An article in the Danish newspaper Politiken for April 6, 1966, notes that the books in the Danish Traveller's Companion Series were published by O. Storm Pallesen in editions of between 30,000 and 40,000 copies. The article further states that while the first volume of the series, Glædeshuse, apparently either failed to attract the attention of or was not found to be objectionable by the Danish authorities, the two following books, Regnbuesex and Paula, were declared pornographic by a police solicitor and a city court judge, and were confiscated by the police at 8 a.m. upon the morning of the day following their publication.
