Introductory Note

A casual browsing of the on-line catalogue of the Frankfurt Library led me to the discovery that it possesses in excess of 800 books in the German language published by the Olympia Press. Knowing something of the Paris and New York operations of the company, I found this number to be surprisingly high, and took a closer look. It turned out, of course, that the majority of them were original works written for the German side of the business, but a good proportion were translations of novels first published either at Paris or New York.

My initial explorations revealed only German editions of Paris titles since I searched for these specifically, by author, being under the impression that no American titles would be represented. However, Jan Moret supplied details of several translations of American novels in his collection, information which prompted me to check all 800 titles at Frankfurt. In keeping with German efficiency, a slightly daunting task was made a little easier by finding the original English titles being thoughtfully provided in the catalogue entries.

The bibliographical details of the German Olympia are complex, and some work will be required to clarify the situation. Jan Moret provides the following notes, which I paraphrase slightly:

The German Olympia Press started out as hardbacks, but there were several series with different coloured dust jackets. Some had green d/j's with oval coloured photos. These were not numbered. On the front covers was the title of the book and "Olympia Press Darmstadt." These titles are all translations and date from 1969/70.

Another series had the same look, but on the back of the d/j appeared "Grundgezetz fur die Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Artikel 5. Jeder hat das Recht, seine Meinung… "Eine Zensur findet nicht statt." Something to do with Freedom of the Press. This series is numbered, the titles in Jan's collection being 519, 536, 537, which are too high to make sense unless the numeration started at some number higher than 1.

A series called "Sonderreihe" or special books have yellow dust jackets. The titles in Jan's collection are all original German novels, but a number of translations of this description will be found listed below.

Olympia Press Buchclub, Darmstadt. These have red dust jackets with no photo.

A series with "O-Produktion" on the d/j. "Don't ask me what that means," adds Jan.

The above series all appeared between the approximate years 1969-1971 and were priced at 15 or 18DM.

German Olympia Press pocket books began to be published in 1971, and look like the familiar Traveller's Companion series. They are numbered, beginning with 1, and according to advertisements four titles a month were published at 8 DM. The earliest title in Jan's collection is no. 16, while the most recent, published in 1991, is numbered 947 and priced at 15 DM. The first titles were reprints of the hardbacks, and included translations, but eventually only original German works were published.

In addition to these notes, I am indebted to Jan Moret for the reproductions of Olympia Press dust jackets from his collection.
