Messes noires front wrapper

The front wrapper of 'L'Envoutée', the eighth episode of L'Amant de la Démone which was itself the first of three volumes of a long part-work published under the collective title Les Messes noires. Published about 1903, Les Messes noires predates the Select-Bibliothèque series, but is included in a Select-Bibliothèque catalogue. Further details will be found below, at entry no.10.

A Checklist of the
Publications of the
Select Bibliothèque

Introductory Note

The Select-Bibliothèque was one of several publishing houses specializing in fetish material that flourished in Paris during the first half of the twentieth century. Like the others, notably Jean Fort's 'Orties Blanches' series and the 'Librairie Artistique et Editions Parisiennes Reunies' of Paul Brenet, the books of the Select Bibliothèque were published openly. Occasionally a title would cross some mysterious line and be prosecuted, but in general, since there was no sex in the conventional sense, these publishers were left to their devices by the authorities.

Despite the openness of these books, the publisher of the Select Bibliothèque remains unknown, at least to this cataloguer. In fact, Massy was where the earliest books in the series were published. The almost anagramitic similarity of the names of the authors of most of the books – Bernard Valonnes, Don Brennus Aléra, Roland Brevannes – suggests a single hand at work, and one that spanned in excess of 30 years. And it might not be unreasonable to think that the author was also the publisher.

Mr. J. B. Rund of Bélier Press in New York, who is an authority on material of this sort, generously favoured me with some information on the Select Bibliothèque, which I have taken the liberty of paraphrasing.

The numbered titles in the series were in a small 8vo – closer to 16mo – format, and began publication in 1907. However, there were also a handful of earlier titles, in a larger octavo format and on better paper, which were not numbered. I've only seen one of these [in a private collection in Hamburg]. These were also published circa 1907. It is probable that the unnumbered titles, being on better paper, proved to be uneconomical prompting the publisher to change to a smaller format and cheaper paper soon thereafter. Note also that only of a few of the Select Bibliothèque titles went into second printings, and so the Catalogues or 'Tarifs' which appeared in the front of each volume are usually incomplete, some titles being missing. I've only ever seen one title that the Select Bibliothèque itself reprinted, and that too was in Hamburg.

There were three different illustrators. The first of these was 'Tack', who was a better artist than his successors, but old fashioned. The others were 'Esbey' and 'Selby', who were rather naïve but who had better imaginations than 'Tack'. It is Interesting that this series is so cohesive in concept and production, from 1907 through 1939 when it probably ceased.

I would also like to thank Mr. Joe Zinnato of Eros Archives in Los Angeles for taking the time to furnish me with some of the scans that illustrate this page. And once more I have to tip my hat to Jan Moret. He provided me with the copies of two Select Bibliothèque catalogues which piqued my curiosity sufficiently to investigate further.

I at first assumed that the two unnumbered entries that head the list were examples of the out-of-series and better produced novels referred to by J. B. Rund. Both appear in an undated Select Bibliothèque 'tarif' that includes fifty-three numbered titles and 6 English translations. These latter have the same numbers as the French-language originals they are translated from, but are distinguished from them by having bis following the number, thus: 37 bis. However, Jan Moret pointed out that while they are in fact hors-séries, they are not fetish books at all, but rather do-it-yourself manuals on how to win large sums of money at casinos.

– The Kinsey Institute copy includes a "Catalog des ouvrages spéciaux édités par Select bibliothèque" between p. [241]-255. This appears to be wanting from the Bibliothèque Nationale copy, or else their cataloguer ignored it.

2. BRÉVANNES, Roland. – Fleur vénéneuse. Massy (Seine-et-Oise): Select Bibliothèque, 1907. In-16, 245 pp., fig. [?by 'Tack']., couverture illustrée [by 'Mas.']. Part of the series 'Les Nuits rouges.' (Bibliothèque Nationale: RES P- Y2- 372.)

– Translated into English as The underground Haunt, the adventures of two flagellants from the private diary of the baron de M***, a flagellant of note (Sceaux: Select Bibliothèque, 1912. 9. In-18, 272 pp., [9] leaves of plates, signed 'Tack.' (Bibliothèque Nationale: RES P- Y2- 450.)

– The Bibliothèque Nationale gives the date 1902 for their copy, which is evidently a misprint. The copy in the Kinsey Institute (843.8 A37 e76 1908) is correctly dated. Translated into English as White Women slaves in the middle of the XIXth Century (Sceaux: Select-Bibliothèque, 1910. In-18, 270 pp. 9 plates by 'Tack.' Bibliothèque Nationale: RES P- Y2- 534.)

10. BRÉVANNES, Roland. – Les Messes Noires.

I am greatly obliged to Ms. Nathalie Quirion for the following precisions concerning Les Messes noires. Ms Quirion's own website is of great interest:

- Les Messes noires is not a single novel, but a "part work" that was published regularly in small booklets of 16 pages, and sold every Wednesday and Saturday for 10 centimes. Every eighteen days, five of these booklets would be bound together and sold for 50 centimes. These booklets seem to have been published around 1903, and therefore before the Select-Bibliothèque series was launched. Les Messes noires was published by Librairie des Publications Populaires, 16, rue des Fossés-Saint-Jacques, Paris, but printed at Sceaux by Imprimerie Charaire. The series was illustrated by 'Bluck.' I recently purchase one of these booklets, titled L'Envoûtée. It is number 8 of the series, measures 9 x 6 inches and the pagination starts at p. 561 and ends at 649. Les Messes noires are divided into three parts: L'Amant de la Démone, Le Sabbat and Les Messes sanglantes. L'Envoûtée belongs to the first part. The series appears to eschew fetichism or erotism, concentraing instead on "love and passion"

Despite the fact Les Messes noires was published before Select-Bibliothèque, there appears to be some connection or continuity between the two since a friend in the Netherlands, Jan Moret, sent me the following, quoted from a Select-Bibliothèque catalogue in his collection: "Les Messes Noires par Roland Brévannes. price Fr 10. Pièce mise a la scène en 1904 et Interdite. Curieuse reconstitution des pratiques du Sabbat. Evolution du culte satanique du XVe siècle au XXe. Album a l'italienne, avec photographies prises en scène."

11. ALÉRA, Don Brennus. – Fêtes barbares, mœurs de l'État de Louisiane au milieu du XIXe siècle. Massy (Seine-et-Oise): Select Bibliothèque, 1908. In-16, 262 pp. [8] leaves of plates, signed 'Tack.' (Bibliothèque Nationale: RES P- Y2- 453. – Kinsey Institute: 843.8 A37 f4 1908.)

– Translated into English as Barbaric Fêtes, slavish customs in the middle of the nineteenth century (Sceaux (Seine): Select bibliothèque, 1910. In-16, 272 pp., pl. Bibliothèque Nationale: RES P- Y2- 547. There is a copy in the British Library at P.C. 31 d. 43 the catalogue entry for which gives the pagination as 172.)

– There is no listing that I can find in the Bibliothèque Nationale for an edition of this work published by the Select-Bibliothèque. There is, however, an entry for an edition published in 1899 with the imprint 'Nice: impr. du Petit Niçois.' The pressmark is: 8- YF- 1099. Jan Moret writes: "In my cataloque there is a picture of the cover of the book. On the cover the name Ysabeau is misspelled as 'Ysabau. Préface de Francois Coppée."

Massy (Seine-et-Oise): Select Bibliothèque, 1908. 19cm. 256 pp., [8] leaves of plates by 'Tack.' (Kinsey Institute: 843.8 A37 s7 1908.)

– A copy of an English translation of this novel is in the Kinsey Institute. It maintains the title of the French original, and has the imprint: 'Sceaux (Seine): Select Bibliothèque, 1921.' As with the edition of 1908 it is illustrated by 'Tack', but it has only 171 pages it may be abridged. The Kinsey pressmark is: 843.8 A37 s7E 1921. In a Select Bibliothèque catalogue, however, the title is given as "Under the Yoke."

15. ALÉRA, Don Brennus. – Le Journal d'une flagellée. Sceaux: Select Bibliothèque, 1909. In-18, 258 pp. Illustrated by 'Tack.' (Bibliothèque Nationale: RES P- Y2- 468.)

– What would appear to be an English translation of this called The Diary of a flagellee [sic] was published with the imprint: 'Sceaux: Select bibliothèque, 1925.' Bibliothèque Nationale: 8- Y2- 90000 (1126).

16. ALÉRA, Don Brennus. – Souvenirs cuisants. Sceaux (Seine): Select Bibliothèque, 1909. In-18, 272 pp., pl. [by 'Tack'].

– Nathalie Quirion has in her collection a copy of this title in which the plates are printed on white paper, different in quality to the paper used for the text. Ms Quirion has also drawn my attention to an English translation of this: In Louisiana. Slavish customs in the middle of the XIXth century, Select Bibliothèque, 1912.

21. VALLONES, Bernard. – Maisons Closes. Sceaux (Seine): Select Bibliothèque, 1910. In-16. Illust. by 'Tack.' (Bibliothèque Nationale: RES P- Y2- 525.)
